Emphasis 2 Entitlement Only

Professional Education Requirements for Students
with a B.S. (or higher) degree in Chemistry
or Chemical Engineering

ED00038_.wmf (1352 bytes)

Middle Grade Endorsement:

The student must complete ILAS 301 and EPS 406 or 508 to include a middle grade endorsement with his or her certification.

Waiver:

In some cases, the ILAS 201 clinical can be waived for candidates that have substantive high school teaching experience (i.e., substitute teaching). In this case, certification can be completed in three semesters. Consult the discipline coordinator for more information, or to arrange for an interview.

Students with a B.S. or higher degree in chemistry or chemical engineering can pursue the "Entitlement Only" option for a standard (Type 09) high school teaching certificate. The Illinois State Board of Education no longer has specific general education requirements, but candidates for teacher certification must still satisfy various professional education requirements in content, foundations, psychology, and methods. Also required for most candidates are clinicals and student teaching (CHEM 497). Qualifying post-baccalaureate students seeking entitlement only must first apply to the Graduate School and declare student-at-large (SAL) status.

A tentative schedule of courses (26 - 31 semester hours) is given below. The schedule assumes that all discipline requirements been satisfactorily completed, including two semesters of general physics and two semesters of calculus. Consult the undergraduate catalog for more information about these requirements.

Courses in red are offered by the College of Education and usually have summer and off-campus options.

The following courses are intended to meet the state's core standards for all science teachers:
CHEM 201X: The Professional Secondary Science Teacher
CHEM 301X: The Interdisciplinary Secondary Science Teacher
CHEM 490X: Science across Time and Culture
CHEM 493X: Interdisciplinary Teaching of Secondary Sciences - Methods I
CHEM 494: Use of Technology in Chemistry Teaching
CHEM 495X: Teaching of Physical Sciences - Methods II
CHEM 496: Transition to the Professional Chemistry Teacher
CHEM 497: Student Teaching in Chemical / Physical Sciences

Chemistry teacher certification candidates will also learn how to use SharePoint technology to design, implement, and assess a standards-based instructional module. SharePoint, a Microsoft technology, enables web-based teaming, tracking, and assessment. The process spans three semesters and includes CHEM 494, ILAS 401/ILAS 300, and CHEM 497. The project is designed to produce performance outcomes aligned with state and national standards for pre-service teachers. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the new "intensive student teaching" initiative (ILAS 300) to transition their instructional modules into the student teaching semester, CHEM 497. Contact the discipline coordinator to learn more.
